This is Sunday’s Trouvailles, my Sunday morning newsletter, which is the online version of a favourite Parisian weekend activity - browsing a brocante, local market or garage sale in search of trouvailles (lucky finds). Each week, I’ll share the best of my cultural findings from the week and the archives, aka my piles of saved links, screenshots from my camera roll and paper treasures stashed in boxes.
Hello! This weekend feels like we jumped straight into summer here in Paris, and I have been making the most of the incredible weather soaking in the city with my brother and his girlfriend, who are visiting us.
I have come across and have been reading about some great films of different sorts recently, so this week's newsletter is full of cinematic trouvailles!
A reminder that the first month of free newsletters is coming to an end. While Sunday’s Trouvailles and some other posts will continue to be free for everyone, if you want access to all posts, you can sign up to become a Paid Subscriber or a Founding member. As a thank you for being with me from the beginning, I’m offering 10% off subscriptions until 13 April. That price will then be your price for as long as you stay subscribed in the future.
📽️ Cinematic Trouvailles:
Dancing gardens - The UK Royal Ballet & Opera has filmed a short movie called ‘Dreams of Giverny’ in the famous Claude Monet’s gardens in Giverny, which looks so beautiful. A young woman admiring the water lily pond starts daydreaming and finds herself wearing pointe shoes and dancing around the blooming garden. Suddenly, she sees the ghost of a girl who guides her around dancing with her, until she wakes up and tries to understand if it was all a dream or not.
Here is a short clip:
A night with Amélie - On 27 and 28 April, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the movie Amélie, Café des Deux Moulins, the famous Montmartre location seen in the film, is organising a musical screening with a pianist and a violinist, followed by a dinner inspired by the film. It would be such a fun night in Paris or an idea to recreate wherever you are at home!
Reading Lolita in Teheran - This movie is an adaptation of Azar Nafisi’s memoir and it just came out in cinemas in France. I went to watch it with a friend last weekend and I thought it was stunning, incredibly sad, and so visually powerful. I have seen this actually came out at the end of last year and you can watch it on Mubi.
A dress to not impress - New pictures from the filming locations of Wuthering Heights in Yorkshire have come out, meanwhile, people are still discussing whether Margot Robbie’s dress to portray Catherine’s wedding gown is anacronystic. This article from The Conversation has some interesting details on what is accurate and what is not. The movie has already received a series of criticisms, but I’m sure we will all watch it when it comes out next year!
A new Odyssey - I didn’t know about Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey until this weekend and I’m both intrigued by the incredible cast and wondering if it will actually have anything to do with the Odyssey. They are calling it both “visionary take” and “a masterpiece”, so we’ll have to see how “visionary” it is.
Have a wonderful Sunday ☀️
