This is the first edition of Sunday’s Trouvailles, my Sunday morning newsletter, which is the online version of a favourite Parisian weekend activity - browsing a brocante, local market or garage sale in search of trouvailles (lucky finds). Each week, I’ll share the best of my cultural findings from the week and the archives, aka my piles of saved links, screenshots from my camera roll and paper treasures stashed in boxes.
I’m in Madrid this weekend for a girls’ trip with friends, so while you are reading this, I might be exploring the local physical flea market, El Rastro (if the rain lets us). It has been held every Sunday since 1740 in the streets around Calle de la Ribera de Curtidores.
Here are my trouvailles of the week:
🧭 Trouvailles to…explore:
Explore vintage markets in France - While we are here at our online brocante, if you are in France and looking for the best vintage markets and thrifting spots, you can use this site to find one near you. Or my friend Mel (@localsandtravellers) creates curated selections every week that are a great place to start.
Bonus tip: you will likely see three different names - brocante = the higher end vintage markets, marché aux puces = flea markets, and vide grenier (local “attic”/garage sales) and
Monocle Café opened a new location in Paris this month and it’s stunning. I went for a coffee date with friends and we couldn’t stop looking at the magazines and gorgeous decor. It’s much more spacious than I expected and the coffee was really nice too.

Centre Pompidou Musée en Fête party - On Monday the Centre Pompidou will close its doors for major renovations and throughout this weekend and until tomorrow the Musée en Fête celebrations are taking place with a fun programme of cultural events.
🎧 Trouvailles to…listen to:
This week I finally went to see Ainda Estou Aqui (I’m still here), the Brazilian movie that won the Oscar for best international feature and was nominated for Oscar for best movie. It is so beautiful and deeply moving and today I wanted to share with you the movie’s soundtrack, which I loved.
📚 Trouvailles to…read:
A photography book of literary Paris - I recently visited the photography exhibition ‘Un Abécédaire Littéraire Parisien, d’Aragon à Zola Catalogue of Abeccedaire’ at Galerie Roger-Viollet. Through black and white pictures, the curator created an imaginary stroll through the favourite Paris haunts of famous writers who lived in the city. In collaboration with publishing house Gallimard, they published a catalogue recreating the exhibition and adding texts from the featured writers, which will transport you to Paris of the 19th and 20th centuries.
A Substack find -
’s beautiful piece imagining life in Cornwall with some words that really stuck with me:I spend far too much time putting inordinate amounts of pressure on myself to do something extraordinary with my life, but simply being present and alive to witness it is probably the most extraordinary thing I could ever hope to do. -
📺 Trouvailles to…watch:
Stunning Sicily - I just started to watch The Leopard (Il Gattopardo) on Netflix, a series based on Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s 1958 novel. While I have studied it in school in my Italian literature classes, I haven’t read the book so I can’t compare whether the plot is completely faithful to the original one. But I was stunned by the Sicilian interiors and landscape. They chose incredible palaces and countryside spots to film the scenes, as well as setting numerous scenes in the middle of Palermo city centre.
🕰️ Future trouvailles…to book ahead:
Musical Tribute to David Hockney: From 9 April to 1 September, the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris will host the largest David Hockney retrospective ever curated titled ‘David Hockney, 25 - Do remember they can't cancel the Spring’. To celebrate the opening of the exhibition in April the foundation has organised a series of concerts that look like a beautiful way to experience the show.
💌 Let me know if you have enjoyed discovering any of my findings this week and add yours in the comment! I would love know what you discovered this week.
I hope you have a wonderful Sunday, see you next week!
This Sunday’s Trouvailles is a trouvaille itself! Thanks!
